1.3 Vectors and scalars A scalar quantity has size only e.g. mass, energy, speed, distance A vector quantity has both size and direction e.g. force, acceleration, velocity, displacement Graphical addition of vectors: Place the vectors end-to-end, the sum is the vector from the beginning of the first to the end of the last Mathematical addition of vectors: Split all vectors in components along the x- and y-axes Add the x- and y-components separately Construct the sum vector from the summed components
