Recognition of Foundation Skills Development Thorough Planning It is important that two issues are carefully addressed: What are the key Foundation Skills which form the basis of the ACE course delivery? What features of the named Foundation Skills form the basis of the ACE course delivery? The tutor MUST be able to describe what competency looks like © Community Centres SA 2016

Recognition of Foundation Skills Development What are the key Foundation Skills which form the basis of the ACE course delivery? Each ACE course is designed to develop specific Foundation Skills. The unit of competency to which the course is aligned names these skills in the unit document under the heading “Foundation Skills.” Example below. FSKLRG04 – Use basic strategies for work-related learning Foundation Skills - This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance. Skill Performance Criteria Description Reading   Locates and reads information to support own work-related learning Oral Communication Discusses progress with trainer or supervisor Planning and Organising Develops and following a personal learning plan © Community Centres SA 2016

Recognition of Foundation Skills Development Foundation Skills are Identified Reading – ACSF Core Skill – The unit descriptor for the performance feature of this skill is: Locates and reads information to support own work-related learning The tutor MUST decide upon the features that he/she is seeking to evidence competency in Reading. © Community Centres SA 2016

Recognition of Foundation Skills Development Locates and reads information to support own work-related learning The features upon which the tutor decides will align with the focus of the ACE course delivery. For example competency in the performance feature named could be evidenced by a learner: * Using an index *Identifying useful information sources * Researching the internet * Comprehending text * Highlighting significant text * Requiring minimal support from tutor * Relating text to personal goals * Appling information to own context © Community Centres SA 2016

Recognition of Foundation Skills Development What features of the named Foundation Skills form the basis of the ACE course delivery? * Using an index *Identifying useful information sources * Researching the internet * Comprehending text * Highlighting significant text * Requiring minimal support from tutor * Relating text to personal goals * Appling information to own context The above points are indicators /descriptors of competency and relate to the manner in which the course is designed to be delivered. The indicators / descriptors will alter depending upon the course intent and are set by the tutor. © Community Centres SA 2016

Recognition of Foundation Skills Development The Other Foundation Skills The example from the unit FSKLRG04 also contained Foundation Skills of Oral Communication and Planning and Organising. The same process of deciding upon indicators / descriptors of competency will need to be established so that the tutor can recognise competency and mastery of the skill/s.
