Rachel Carson

Born and lived in the Northeast United States from 1907-1964

Occupation Rachel Carson started her career as a Marine Biologist. Being such a strong conservationist, she began writing full time in the mid-1950's.

Contribution to Society

Silent Spring- 1962 Rachel Carson's writing of Silent Spring helped start a huge movement in environmental protection and conservation. Her book helped expose the negatives of the pesticides being sprayed on farms, including DDT, which were later banned from the United States.

Fitting in with APES The work of Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, fits in the the APES study of pollution and the effects agriculture has on the environment. When it rains, chemicals that have been sprayed on plants run into streams or rivers. These chemicals, meant to kill insects, can have harmful effects on species living in the surrounding environment.
