Tobacco use is the second highest preventable cause of death in the United States resulting in an annual cost of more than $75 billion in direct medical costs. Each year more that 450,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking. In fact, one in every five deaths in the U.S. is smoking related. (1994) On average, smokers die nearly seven years earlier than nonsmokers. Every day over 3,000 young people under the age of 18 become regular smokers. Teens who smoke are three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is associated with a host of other risky behaviors, such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex.
