What kind of living things we find depends upon where we are in the ocean.

Our ocean has 3 zones:

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. 2. 3.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = 2. 3.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. 3.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. 3.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. CONTINENTAL SHELF 3.

See how shallow shelf/neritic zone varies around the world.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. CONTINENTAL SHELF = NERITIC ZONE 3.

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. CONTINENTAL SHELF = NERITIC ZONE coral reefs kelp forests 3. DEEP ZONE = BENTHIC ZONE

How do our ocean zones compare?

Let’s make a SIMPLE table for notes! Should take up at LEAST a HALF PAGE! LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL NERITIC BENTHIC

Let’s see if anyone can predict how this table will turn out!

Which zone has the most PRESSURE? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL NERITIC BENTHIC

The deeper you go, the ______ the pressure.

The deeper you go, the more the pressure.

Which zone has the most PRESSURE? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL NERITIC BENTHIC HIGHEST

Which zone has the most PRESSURE? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC HIGHEST

Which zone has the most SUNLIGHT? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC HIGHEST

Which zone has the most sunlight? deep zone

The shoreline has the most sunlight. deep zone

The shoreline has the most sunlight. Sometimes TOO MUCH sunlight.

Which zone has the most SUNLIGHT? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL HIGHEST LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC

The shelf (neritic zone) gets a right amount of light.

The BENTHIC zone get LITTLE if any SUNLIGHT. LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL HIGHEST LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC LOW or NO LIGHT

The BENTHIC zone get LITTLE if any SUNLIGHT. LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL HIGHEST LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC LOW or NO LIGHT

In the BENTHIC zone, living things get their energy CHEMICALLY from HYDROTHERMAL VENTS (not sun).

What about life??? LIFE LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL HIGHEST LOW NERITIC MEDIUM BENTHIC LOW or NO LIGHT

Which zone has the highest concentration, highest density of life?

coral reefs

kelp forests 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. CONTINENTAL SHELF = NERITIC ZONE 3.

Neritic zone has the highest concentration of sea life …conditions are just right! LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL HIGHEST LOW NERITIC (CONDITIONS JUST RIGHT) HIGH DENSITY MEDIUM BENTHIC LOW or NO LIGHT

Which zone has life suited for wet & dry conditions?

The INTERTIDAL zone has life best suited for wet or dry conditions!

Neritic zone has the highest concentration of sea life …conditions are just right! LIGHT PRESSURE INTERTIDAL WET & DRY conditions HIGHEST LOW NERITIC (IDEAL CONDITIONS) HIGH DENSITY MEDIUM BENTHIC LOW or NO LIGHT

Which zone has the most diverse array of life? diverse= different types

Surprisingly, the BENTHIC zone has the greatest VARIETY of living things anywhere on Earth! WHY do you think that is?

Almost 90% of our oceans are part of the deep zone.

Surprisingly, the BENTHIC zone has the greatest VARIETY of living things anywhere on Earth! It’s the LARGEST part of our Oceans!

LET’S DRAW the OCEAN ZONES! Use the colored pencils….

What kind of living things do we find in the ocean? You be a MARINE BIOLOGIST!

Ocean Life Lab Work in your pairs

Be a MARINE BIOLOGIST!!! You will need to identify 5 aquatic species of life and fill out the sheets I hand out! 5 complete gets you an “A” 4…a “B” 3…a “C” 2…a “D” 1… an “F+”

Remember our 3 ocean zones!

Our ocean has 3 zones: 1. SHORE = INTERTIDAL ZONE 2. CONTINENTAL SHELF = NERITIC ZONE coral reefs kelp forests 3. DEEP ZONE = BENTHIC ZONE

Each pair will get a bag of ocean life and you must classify at least 5. FILL IN YOUR TABLE COMPLETELY!

Each pair will get a bag of ocean life and you must classify at least 5. FILL IN YOUR SHEETS COMPLETELY!

Each pair will get a bag of ocean life and you must classify at least 3-5. FILL IN YOUR SHEETS COMPLETELY! (optional) PRESENT YOUR MOST INTERESTING SAMPLE!

Clean-up….

Monday, you will make an AQUATIC/TERRESTRIAL FOOD WEB! This will be due end Tuesday as soon class ends Your food web should have 15 species, & include at least 5 aquatic and 5 terrestrial living things. You should have at least 2 producers (living things that make their own food like plants or chemosynthesizers) 1 must be a type of phytoplankton (species name please) Arrow point towards the EATER! Use CHROMEBOOKS, NOTES and TEXTBOOK Use words AND/OR art, but be SPECIES specific and accurate.

In the BENTHIC zone, living things get their energy CHEMICALLY from HYDROTHERMAL VENTS (not sun).

2 ways LIFE can begin at the base of Earth food webs: PHOTOSYNTHESIS from the SUN CHEMOSYNTHESIS from HYDROTHERMAL VENTS LAND plants trees SHALLOW SEA algae phytoplankton DEEP/BENTHIC ZONE (no sunlight) tube worms special bacteria
