Specific Heat

Specific Heat - the amount of energy required to heat a given mass of a substance 1o C. The higher the specific heat, the slower that material heats up and cools down. High specific heat = slower heating and cooling time Lower specific heat = faster heating and cooling time

Land Breeze vs. Sea Breeze

Sea Breeze Because water has a higher specific heat than land, the land heats up faster. This results in the air above the land to be warmer than the air above the water. Because air is fluid, these differences in temperature result in differences in density and a convection current is generated. As a result a cool breeze from the sea blows on to land creating a sea breeze. Land Breeze Again, because water has a higher specific heat than land, the land cools down faster than the water (which holds on to the heat it absorbed during the day much longer than the land). As a result now the water is warmer than the land the direction of the convection current changes directions. Now cool air blows from the land towards the water creating a land breeze.
