Presentation transcript:

Bellwork: Thurs. Oct. 27, 2016 1. Photosynthesis produces what gas? ______ 2. Respiration produces what gas? ______ Do you remember… in an experiment… 3. What is the independent variable (IV)?________ 4. What is the dependent variable (DV)?_________ 5. Where do you plot the IV and the DV on a graph? When you have two sets of “changing” numeric values what type of graph do you use? 6CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (from sunlight)  C6H12O6 + 6O2 6O2 + C6H12O6 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP) Variable that is changed (TESTED VARIABLE!) Variable that changes because of the IV (RESPONDING VARIABLE) IV = x axis DV y axis!!! LINE GRAPH!!!

Fun with BTB Lab

Straw and timer (OK to use your phone) Get into groups of 4 – 1 person will be your “lab rat” Materials: Erlenmeyer flask (BTB) in it. Don’t drink it – it will kill you Straw and timer (OK to use your phone) Erlenmeyer flask BTB (Bromothymol blue) indicates pH

Test with - No exercise: Have your exerciser relax first, sit down and put on lab glasses. Take his/her resting heart rate. 2. Using a straw, have them breathe SLOWLY into solution in the flask - one group member starts the timer, another says “stop” as soon as they notice a color change and the last records the time into the data table. (Save their straw for next part)

(HOW TO CHECK YOUR PULSE) (# heartbeats for 6 seconds X 10)

Test With exercise: Get new BTB in your flask, dump old into the “used” container 2. Have “lab rat” exercise vigorously for 5 minutes (jumping jacks, running in place, hopping on alternate feet – and anything else you tell them to do …) 3. Take his/her active heart rate 4. Using straw, have them breathe SLOWLY into solution in flask. (1 group member watches time, another says “stop” as soon as they notice a color change and the last records time into data table.) (Dispose of straw)

Dump used BTB into “used” container Replace all supplies on the blue tray 7. Record the “change in heart rate” and “change in time” on class data sheet on smartboard. Heart Rate (BPM) Time to Color Change (sec) At rest With exercise Change in Heart Rate (BPM) Change in Time to Color Change (sec) Record this on chart on Smartboard

Data Table: Class Data: Make a data table with 8 of data points from the class. Put your group “Change in Heart Rate (BPM)” and “Change in Time to Color Change (sec)”

Class Chart Group (Color) Black White Yellow Pink Blue Orange Change* in Heart Rate (BPM) Change* in Time to Color Change (sec) Black White Yellow Pink Blue Orange Raspberry Green

Graph: (don’t forget a title) Graph the class data you collected. (determine as a class how to set up the x and y axis) (This graph will have two sets of numbers so it will be a ___________ __________)

Conclusion Questions: use these ideas for your overall conclusion due at the end of this week after we do our second experiment. 1. What were the independent and dependent variables? I.V.=_____________________________________ D.V.=_______________________________________ 2. As heart rate ________________________, the amount of CO2 ____________________________ 3. BTB indicates the amount what gas?___________ This gas is produced in what cell process? ______________________

How change in heart rate affects change in color in BTB Label x axis:__________________________ Label x axis:______________________________________________-
