Natural Sciences and Technology Grade 5 Term 2: Matter and Materials Metals- and Non-metals (PPT 1)

Topic 1 Metals and Non-metals Properties of metals (PPT 1) Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

Properties of metals Metals are usually shiny – the light reflects off their surface. Metals are hard and heavy. Metals are dense – they have particles that are packed closely together. You cannot see through metals (not transparent). They generally make a bell like noise when struck. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

Examples of metal objects Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

Properties of metals Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Metals can be shaped into different forms. Metals do not melt easily. They are usually solid at room temperature (except for mercury). Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

What is mercury? Mercury is also referred to as quicksilver. It is a metal used to measure temperature. It is used in thermometers and barometers Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

Where do metals come from? Metals are mined from the earth. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1

Different types of metals iron steel bronze copper gold silver Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 2, Topic 1
