Topaic / Topic: Boscaí Lóin / Lunch Boxes Gaeilge do Thuismitheoirí – An Fhoghlaim Neamhspleách 1

You’ll be listening to Sinéad describing what she puts in her children’s lunchboxes. Task 1: Spend a moment brainstorming words you know as Gaeilge on this topic. Make notes! Then move on to the next slide!

Task 2: Now listen to Sinéad talking Task 2: Now listen to Sinéad talking. Don’t worry if you don't understand much – you will later!

Ullmhaím Torthaí Sútha talún Caora fíniúna Rollóga Liamhás Cáis Bíonn mearbhall orm! Answers: 1. I prepare 2. fruit 3. strawberries 4. grapes 5. rolls 6. ham 7. cheese 8. I’m addled! (lit. ‘I do be addled’). Task 3: Some of the words that Sinéad used in the recording are listed in the box opposite. Some will be familiar and others will be new. Try to learn a few. Add the new words to your vocabulary notebook.

Task 4: Now listen to the recording again Task 4: Now listen to the recording again. This time you’ll have your new words to hand. Can you understand more than you did last time?

Ullmhaím na boscaí lóin ar maidin Ullmhaím na boscaí lóin ar maidin. Is jab deacair é mar is maith le Caoimhe agus Siún bianna difriúla. Déanaim iarracht gach lá torthaí a thabhairt dóibh – itheann Caoimhe úlla, sútha talún agus caora fíniúna...itheann Siún oráistí, bananaí agus sútha talún chomh maith ach ní maith léi úlla. Déanaim iarracht chomh maith arán nó pasta nó rollóga a bheith acu le píosa éigin próitéin gach lá – sicín, b’fhéidir, nó cáis, nó liamhás nó ubh, fiú. Ní itheann Siún cáis mar ní réitíonn sé léi, ní itheann Caoimhe ubh mar ní maith léi é, is maith le Siún sicín ach ní maith léi liamhás, ní maith le Caoimhe ceapairí ach is maith léi rollóga – bíonn mearbhall orm! Task 5: Listen to the recording again but this time use the tapescript (opposite). Listen as many times as you want – try to use the script to read along with Sinéad as she talks.

Task 6: See if you can record yourself saying a few sentences on the same topic, using Sinéad’s recording as a model. Option: Send the recording to a fellow-parent in your class (on your phone, maybe) if you can, and get some feedback on your effort!

Look at these sample sentences and then try to compose your own. Language corner Note the structure ‘ní réitíonn cáis léi’ – cheese doesn’t agree with her – she is allergic to cheese. Look at these sample sentences and then try to compose your own. Model: Ní réitíonn X liom/leat/leis/léi. Ní réitíonn plúr liom. An réitíonn cáis leat? Ní réitíonn bainne leis.

Language corner páirc + peil = páirc peile mála + scoil = mála scoile Did you notice how ‘bosca’ and ‘lón’ together make ‘bosca lóin’? Look at the other examples in the table on the right. The second noun changes in each case – this change is called the Tuiseal Ginideach. Nothing to be afraid of! It just means in these examples that when 2 words sit next to each other the second one changes – the second word is now in a different state called the Genitive Case – the Tuiseal Ginideach. Simple! páirc + peil = páirc peile mála + scoil = mála scoile ceapaire + cáis = ceapaire cáise cúirt + leadóg = cúirt leadóige
