The Birth of a Democratic Nation Chapter 2-2A The Birth of a Democratic Nation

Objectives Identify the ways the British government tried to tighten control over its American colonies. Describe the ways American colonists resisted and rejected British control

Who designed the Great Seal of the United States Who designed the Great Seal of the United States? The Great Seal was designed by Charles Thomson.

What is mercantilism? Mercantilism is the theory that a country should sell more goods to other countries than it buys. 2. How did mercantilism harm the colonies? Parliament required the American colonies to sell raw materials at low prices and to buy British products at high prices. As a result, colonial businesses suffered.

3. Why did Great Britain increase taxes on the colonies after 1763 3. Why did Great Britain increase taxes on the colonies after 1763? Britain had fought a long, costly war against France. To cover the cost of new lands and to pay off heavy war debts Britain placed steep taxes on the colonies. The French and Indian War was a war between Britain and France. It started in the American colonies and then spread to Europe, where it is called the Seven Years War. Native Americans fought on both sides. Britain won, which is a main reason we speak English here in the USA.

You may have seen the movie, based on the famous book, The Last of the Mohicans. It is set during the French and Indian War.

The practice of scalping appears to be unique to the Native Americans The practice of scalping appears to be unique to the Native Americans. But during the French and Indian War the British, the French and the colonists encouraged the practice by placing bounties and paying for scalps. Even before war was declared, on June 12, 1755, Massachusetts Governor William Shirley offered £40 for Indian male scalps and £20 for female scalps. The following year, on April 14, Pennsylvania Governor Robert Hunter Morris "declared war and proclaimed a general bounty for Indian enemy prisoners and for scalps." The bounties to be paid were £130 for a male scalp and £50 for a female scalp.

4. How did the British respond to the American boycott? Parliament agreed to repeal the Stamp Act and other taxes. 5. Define repeal. Cancel a law

6. What summed up the colonists’ feelings about the new taxes 6. What summed up the colonists’ feelings about the new taxes? The phrase “No taxation without representation” summed up their feelings.

7. Why did the Declaratory Act of 1766 anger the colonists 7. Why did the Declaratory Act of 1766 anger the colonists? The Declaratory Act angered the colonists because it stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the colonists “in all cases”. 8. What was the reason for the Boston Tea Party? The colonists did this to protest further taxes on tea.

9. What did the American colonists call the Coercive Acts? The Intolerable Acts 10. Why did the Coercive Acts anger the colonists? They restricted the colonists rights , including the right to a trial by jury and gave the right of search and seizure, without a warrant, to the British.

Tea was seen as a symbol of the intolerable relationship between colonies and mother country. After independence, many Americans remained faithful to coffee, and the consumption of tea would never again reach the levels attained in the preceding era. Eyewitness accounts report that some Bostonians tried to “sneak” some tea during the “Party” by hiding in their pockets, hats and even wigs! When caught it was taken from them and the sneak was “kicked” away! On the morning of December 17, 1773, a young John Robinson collected a souvenir tea chest from the Boston Tea Party the night before.

What did the representatives at the First Continental Congress want to establish? They wanted to establish a political body to represent American interests and challenge British control.

12. What was in the document the representatives sent to King George III? The document demanded that the rights of the colonists be restored. 13.How did King George respond? King George responded with force and it led to the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

In terms of accomplishments and casualties the battle of Lexington and Concord was not a major battle. With 1,800 men engaged, the British losses were 73 dead, 26 missing, and 174 wounded or 273 total casualties. Estimated rebel losses for 4,000 men were 49 killed, 5 missing and 41 seriously wounded for a total of 95 casualties.

14. What decision did the Second Continental Congress make in 1776 14. What decision did the Second Continental Congress make in 1776. They decided that the colonies must break away from Britain.

Answer on the back of your paper. Name three events that happened in Colonial American before the Declaration of Independence.
