CoE in the Context of MHSC The CoE falls under SIMRAC, and comprises of three different chronological work streams

Research Determination Research Determination Specialist RDTC – Research Determination Technical Committee Objectives of the RDTC Procurement of relevant research services and products Influence improvements on OHS through research Focus on the development of new research programs (through stakeholder consultation) Consolidate research programs and budgets

Research needs analysis process: Evidence based research motivation template MHSC 2018/2019 ANNUAL RESEARCH PROGRAMME: EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH MOTIVATION 1. Research question to be addressed PPE for WIM 2. Proposed Study Mines / Sites / Population List proposed study sites and population 3. Background / motivation to the research question Introduction of women into the historically male dominated mining industry comes with OHS challenges, as WIM have special OHS needs resulting from their unique anatomical and physiological makeup. To this end, there is need to conduct research to address OHS issues affecting WIM.   4. Expected outcomes of the research Develope comprehensive and systematic requirements to assist the mining industry in the selection and provision of appropriate PPE (clothing, ablution and sanitary facilities) for WIM 5. Initiatives Action Progress 1 2 3 4 5 Safety and security challenges impacting women in the SAMI (WiM) Conduct regional workshops Rustenburg Klerksdorp, MP,KZN 2 Electronic Summit Milestone Reporting System to evaluate and monitor the progress made on the implementation of the 2014 OHS Summit Milestones Roll out of the system for mines to input milestone data before the summit in November 2018 The system is working, users workshop being held 3 Technology transfer on minimizing seismic risk in the platinum mines Workshops held in Eastern/Western Limb Done 4 Identify opportunities to improve the safety of barring-down practices Popularize and disseminate a booklet has been developed for implementation on safe barring practices targeting senior officials and management Booklet content nearly completed 5 Recently the following guidelines relating to occupational health were completed Airborne pollutants TB guidance note Guideline for management of Integrated TB/HIV and AIDS In progress
