Chapter 22  When Evelyn plans to go to the church the next morning, Mami stops her in her tracks. Mami insists on going with her. Inside the medical care, breakfast program, and clothing drive have begun. There is still tension between Mami and Abuela.

Chapter 23  Mami continues to go with Evelyn to the church. Angel starts to learn Puerto Rican history and Abuela is teaching history lessons. As Mami watches Abuela, Evelyn realizes Mami misses Abuela.

Chapter 24 At the church, two movie stars arrive. Then, Pedro Piertri, that unveils the way they live in El Barrio. Evelyn is mad at the poem. Abuela makes plans to meet Evelyn for a clothing drive.

Chapter 25 Evelyn meets with Abuela to gather clothing donations. Evelyn and Abuela stand up to Dora and Awilda. An old lady is looking for a sweater , and as Evelyn digs through a pile of clothes, she notices a sweater that belongs to her mother. Later, they watch a movie about the war in Algiers. Migdalia tells Evelyn about the guy in a wheelchair who got shot during a gang fight.

Chapter 26 Mami lets Evelyn go to church by herself for the first time. As Evelyn arrives at the church, she sees the Tv that was stolen from the bodega. It is being carried by Gang members into the church. Mami apologizes to Wilfredo for accusing him of breaking in.

Chapter 27 For days have passed since the Young Lords took over the church. The neighborhood arrives on New Year's Eve to celebrate. Mami shares the pasteles with everyone.

Chapter 28 The occupation of the church has ended. The police arrive at the church. Evelyn is hit with a bottle causing her to collapse in Mami's arms. Mami takes Evelyn to the hospital, while Abuela stays at the protest. At the hospital, Evelyn starts to cry over Abuela and Mami tells her not to be like her. Evelyn realizes she is like her mother and needs her there with her.

Chapter 29 Evelyn receives stiches at the hospital.  When they get home, Evelyn is still sad about Abuela not being there, causing Mami to fuss. Abuela arrives, excited about the newspaper article. The story ends with Evelyn allowing her stepfather to call her Rosa.
