What Does It Mean to be In Christ ?

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. - v2-8

Romans 8:1-4 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:5-8 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. A. The Law was powerless to make people sinless because the flesh was too weak. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature . . . - v3

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. 1. When you are not in Christ, you let sin control your life instead of God’s Spirit. Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires . . . - v5

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. 2. The result of the sin oriented life is death – because: c. The sin oriented life is not able to obey the Law be- cause it is too weak. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature . . . - v3

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. 2. The result of the sin oriented life is death – because: d. The sin oriented life can’t please God. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. - v8

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. A. The Law was powerless to make people sinless because the flesh was too weak. B. So God did something about it!

The Law condemned The Son saves! I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. B. So God did something about it! John 3:17 - For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. The Law condemned The Son saves!

2. The Lord was sent as a man – with human weaknesses. I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. B. So God did something about it! John 3:17 - For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 2. The Lord was sent as a man – with human weaknesses. Matthew 4:1-11.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. B. So God did something about it! John 3:17 - For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 3. The Lord made it possible for the legal demands of the Law to be fulfilled in you. How?

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. a. The Lord fulfilled the Law by obeying it perfectly - as a man. Hebrews 4:15. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. b. Then – the Law was nailed to the cross! Colossians 2:13-14 - When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. 4. When you identify with the Lord Jesus – shown in your baptism – His victory over the Law’s requirements becomes your victory!

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. a. You were made righteous – Romans 3:21-22 - But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. b. You were justified by His blood. Romans 5:9 - Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. c. You are free from sin’s do- mination. Romans 6:22 - But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. d. You are no longer under condemnation. Romans 8:1 - Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. e. You become the people of God. I Peter 2:10 - Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. - v2-8 II I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. - v2-8 II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. - v9-13

Romans 8:9-11 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Romans 8:12-13 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live . . .

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. – v9.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. 1. You can’t be in the Spirit – and in the flesh at the same time!

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. 1. You can’t be in the Spirit – and in the flesh at the same time!

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. 2. When you become in Christ, the Spirit supersedes the flesh!

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. 2. When you become in Christ, the Spirit supersedes the flesh! 3. If the Spirit is not in you – you are not a Christian!

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. A. If God’s Spirit is dwelling in you, you are in the Spirit. B. So – how do you know if you have God’s Spirit?

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. B. So – how do you know if you have God’s Spirit? 1. You know when you are obeying God’s word.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. B. So – how do you know if you have God’s Spirit? 1. You know when you are obeying God’s word. Acts 2:38-39 - Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. B. So – how do you know if you have God’s Spirit? 2. You know when you surrender your life to the Lord.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 2. You know when you surrender your life to the Lord. a. This surrender is illustrated in your baptism. Notice the similarity

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 2. You know when you surrender your life to the Lord. b. Your body will be dead be- cause of sin. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin . . . – v10

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 2. You know when you surrender your life to the Lord. c. Your spirit is alive because of the Lord’s righteousness. . . . yet your spirit is alive because of right-eousness. – 10

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 2. You know when you surrender your life to the Lord. c. Your spirit is alive because of the Lord’s righteousness. Romans 5:18 - Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 3. The indwelling Holy Spirit will raise you up & give you life. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. – v11.

II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. 4. This indwelling Holy Spirit will help you kill the practices of your sin oriented life. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation —but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. – v12-13.

I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. - v2-8 II I. Those in Christ are Set Free from the Law. - v2-8 II. Those in Christ Will Know They Are in Christ. - v9-13 III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. - v14-17

Romans 8:14-17 . . . because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” – v15.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! 1. Abba (Aββά from Aramaic אַבּֿא) = “daddy” – the most intimate word a child would use to address his father.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! 2. From Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words: In the Gamara (a Rabbinical commentary on the Mishna, the traditional teaching of the Jews) it is stated that slaves were forbidden to address the head of the family by this title.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! 2. From Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words: It approximates to a personal name, in contrast to “Father,” with which it is always joined in the New Testament. Abba is the word framed by the lips of infants & betokens unreasoning trust; “father” expresses an intelligent apprehension of the relationship. The two together express the love & intelligent confidence of a child.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! Mark 14:36 - “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! Mark 14:36 - “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Galatians 4:6 - Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,  Father.” -

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. A. You have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe! B. You can become an adopted child. . . . because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. - v14 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. - v23

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. B. You can become an adopted child. 1. Adoption” from Nelson’s Illus- trated Bible Dictionary: “Roman law required that the adopter be a male & childless; the one to be adopted had to be an independent adult, able to agree to be adopted. In the eyes of the law, the adopted one became a new creature, he was regarded as being born again into the new family.”

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. B. You can become an adopted child. 2. As an adopted child – you will receive all of God’s inheritance! Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. – v17

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. B. You can become an adopted child. 2. As an adopted child – you will receive all of God’s inheritance! a. Abundant life.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. B. You can become an adopted child. 2. As an adopted child – you will receive all of God’s inheritance! a. Abundant life. b. Forgiveness.

III. Those in Christ are Adopted Children - Not Slaves of Law. B. You can become an adopted child. 2. As an adopted child – you will receive all of God’s inheritance! a. Abundant life. b. Forgiveness. c. Eternal life.

Surrender your life to the Lord right now Surrender your life to the Lord right now! He paid the price on the cross so you could do that. You could be “in Christ” instead of “in the flesh”.
