Law enforcement officials, advocates, and researchers, however, estimated that the real number of unidentified persons in the United States in upwards of 40,000. The Bureau of Justice Statistics is currently writing a techinical report which will explore the history of the NCIC unidentified persons file as well as compare the number of unidentified cases in it with the numbers reported by offices in the 2005 Census of Meedical Examiner and Coroners. This will be the first time that actual national and state-by-state estimates will be available for comparison with those cases in the NCIC unidentified persons file.
