The World Leading to WWI The Main Causes of WWI

Militarism Belief in the power of the armies and navies to decide issues Only way to guarantee peace is to have a strong military If a country is strong no one will oppose it Arms Race – As one country builds their army so do others to keep up. Britain was worried about the German Navy because Britain was an island and therefore needs to control the seas.

Alliances Banding together of countries for safety and protection Triple Entente Britain Canada is automatically at war if Britain is at war France Russia Central Powers/ Triple Alliance Germany Austria-Hungry Italy

Imperialism controlling lands far from home as colonies and building an empire. Europe was becoming industrialized and they needed colonies to provide much needed raw material as well as a market for the goods produced. Colonies also give the home country military strength France, Britain, and Russia had colonies. (Britain had the largest Empire) Germany wanted some colonies but started late Constant arguments between countries about trade and colony ownership.

Nationalism People who are willing to take any action to help their own nation A feeling of loyalty to ones country. Austria-Hungry vs Serbia
