Physical Properties of Elements

What are the physical properties used to group elements? Essential Question What are the physical properties used to group elements?

Groups Numbered columns on the periodic table, they are numbered 1-18 Elements are put in groups based on similar properties

Luster the state or quality of shining by reflecting light An element will either be shiny or dull (not shiny) Dull

Malleable An element that is malleable can be shaped

Ductile Can be shaped or stretched into a wire

Brittle easily damaged or destroyed; fragile If you were to use a hammer on it, it would shatter

Conductor of electricity An element that electricity can travel through

Conductor of heat An element that can move heat energy between 2 points

Magnetic It is attracted to a magnet
