Nipissing District Program Heart Safe Nipissing District Program

2004 VSA District of Nipissing 46 VSA ( vital signs absent) 19 Shock Advised 6 Saves

Objective To increase the amount of saves in our district, by encouraging corporate citizens to come on board and help us acquire Public Access Defibrillators to place them in strategic high risk areas in the District of Nipissing Encourage private business with large number of employees to have an Automatic External Defibrillator at their workplace

Public Access Defibrillation Making a Difference Caring Professionals Public Access Defibrillation When a person falls victim to sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts Most people know that chances for survival increase with early CPR. What most people do not know is that for every minute that the patient is not defibrillated, chances of survival decreases by 10 percent. A defibrillator is a piece of electrical equipment, which can deliver an electrical shock to the heart, allowing the heart to restart. Defibrillators have been used for years by doctors, nurses and paramedics as a life-saving tool. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has put this technology in the hands of members of the public who have little or no medical training. Now, in as little as three hours, security guards, lifeguards, flight attendants family of high-risk individuals or employees in an office tower can learn to save lives.

Sponsorship The PAD Committee have already received sponsors for the purchase of Public Access Defibrillators. CTS Canadian Career College has sponsored the first Life Line Public Access Defibrillator (Memorial Garden). Presentation of this unit took place on Feb. 27th, Skyhawks Game. 2. The Kinsmen of North Bay have committed $10,000.00 towards the marketing of our project. 3. Tim Hortons of North Bay have also committed between $7000.00 to $10,000 in order to place a Life Line Public Access Defibrillator at the Pete Palangio Arena in North Bay. The West Ferris Ladies Rec have also come on board with a donation of $8000.00 In order to place a Lifeline Public Access Defibrillator at the West Ferris Arena. Presentation of this unit took place March 5th, at a Trappers Game. Paramedics throughout the District of Nipissing are working diligently at fundraising for their communities on a volunteer basis. Our initial goal of having all arena’s in the district covered will be a reality sooner than later. Our public campaign will continue until we are satisfied that we have made a difference in our community with the Lifeline project. The arenas are just a start. We have also received private donations which have been expressed as a special request that a defibrillator be placed in specific areas such as high schools in memory of a loved one. The North Bay Professional Paramedic Association is a Registered charitable organization that can give receipts for tax purposes .This is the organization will hold in trust, the funds raised to purchase all related supplies with the program.

Media Coverage The P.A.D. Committee has engaged Benjamin James to help us with the marketing of our project. They were able to secure media coverage in-kind donations from Cogeco, Rogers Communications and they are presently working with the Nugget. They have secured $40,000 worth of inkind media coverage. Radio Clips, Infomercial will be at no cost to the Lifeline committee .

Champion We are really pleased that Mr. Peter Chirico volunteered to champion our cause. Mr. Chirico has experienced first hand the loss of his father to a SCA.

Training at no costs to our membered municipalities We have 12 volunteers trained to train people on how to utilize this piece of equipment. We have trained 12 staff members at the Memorial Gardens and this week will be training the staff from West Ferris Arena at no cost for training to the municipalities. Another goal; is to train as many people as possible at no costs to our membered municipalities where a lifeline PAD exists.

l i f e l i n e Every minute is a lifetime P U B L I C A C C E S S D E F I B R I L L A T O R Donations to the cause must be encouraged in order to sustain the program. The ambulance operators in the district will be given the responsibility where a Life Line Defibrillator resides to perform quality assurance maintenance of these units. The local Ambulance Operator will be supplied with the quality assurance tools to assure that the unit will be operational at all times.

Membership Every ambulance service in our district is represented on this committee. Executive Member of The North Bay Professional Paramedic Association Base Hospital Coordinator District of Nipissing Emergency Medical Services Manager

Advance Care Paramedic Program EMS News Advance Care Paramedic Program initiated March 1,2004 Demonstrator Vehicle Purchased from Crestline. Demers offered us a new vehicle (Ambulance) in exchange for our Crestline Demo at no extras cost to the board. The Demo has 16000 kilometers. Checked with the city purchasing manager for verification that no legal or ethical implication can occur to the Board

Inter-facility transfer issue DHC will be discontinued at the end of March thus leaving a void in health care planning locally. Prior to the termination of this program we have shared some responsibility with respect to the Inter-facility transfer issue. We have poled the hospitals in our district to supply us with stats that could help us in planning in the movement of these clients that do not necessarily require ambulance services.

North Bay Ambulance Accommodation Search The process is ongoing. We have received documents in regards to the buildings that we are looking at. Recommendations/ Report to the Board at next Board Meeting

Any Questions? Thank you
