Module Two - Television

What are you favorite television programs?

What are your parent’s favorite television programs?

What do you think of the shows your parents watch?

What do they think of the shows that you watch?

The concept of Audience is an important element in media literacy. A room full of people can watch the same show and interpret it many different ways. Shows that that you find enjoyable, your parents might find offensive/boring or vise versa.

Every day millions of people, many from different backgrounds and cultures, watch and listen to programs that are offered on radio and TV. Not everyone is going to like what they see or hear. People are entitled to their opinions, but there are times when personal opinion becomes a matter of personal rights.

Are there programs you enjoy that really offend your parents? Why? Has there ever been a program that has offended you? Why

Canada’s Broadcasting Codes The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) has developed broadcasting codes as guidelines for radio and television stations across Canada. Private broadcasters are self regulating, but must adhere to the Violence Code, Sex-role Portrayal code and the Code for Advertising to Children.
