Jefferson DBQ Black person and slave are NOT synonymous. Not all blacks who lived in America in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries were slaves; some were free men. In fact, a handful owned slaves. Slavery existed in what is now the United States between 1619 and 1865; almost all slaves who lived in what is now the United States were black. Slavery and slave trade are not interchangeable terms; they do not mean the same thing. It was possible to be against the slave trade but not against slavery. The slave trade became illegal during Jefferson’s presidency. Slavery, however, was still legal. In fact, Jefferson remained a slave owner. Racism and race are NOT interchangeable words. To own some one is to deprive that person of liberty—to violate their natural rights. Given this fact, I can’t be persuaded that it’s possible to be a kind slaveholder. Having a good reputation is NOT proof that you could never do something that would dishonor your reputation.
