RATIO Their ears ought to be smoking when they exit your room. -Chancellor Robinson

RATIO "Ratio" is the amount of work that is done by the students during a lesson.  There are two categories of ratio, which are "participation ratio" and "thinking ratio."  "Participation ratio" defines the amount of verbal and written work that students do.  All of this is visible and measurable.  "Thinking ratio" defines how much work students are doing in their heads which is just as important, but more difficult to measure.

RATIO AIM: DO NOW: ACTIVITY: Exit Ticket Teachers will use all RATIO techniques and have a plan for using RATIO in their classrooms by practicing, planning, and critiquing RATIO in this session. DO NOW: Draw a diagram to illustrate the process of making a BLT. ACTIVITY: Learn 7 techniques of Ratio Prepare for Techniques Watch Ratio in action Practice Ratio Watch yourselves in action (if time permits) Exit Ticket Create a plan for using RATIO in your class.

Draw a diagram to illustrate the process of making a BLT. RATIO: DO NOW Draw a diagram to illustrate the process of making a BLT.

RATIO: 7 Techniques Unbundle Break a question into pieces to ask more questions Whys and Hows Ask for reasoning What’s Next? Ask about the process as opposed to a final answer Feign Ignorance Pretend you need the student to help you with the process or answer

RATIO: 7 Techniques Call and Response If James Brown did it on stage, how can you go wrong? Turn and talks They are going to try and talk to each other. We are social beings. Give them an opportunity to do so with the work. Batch Process Allow students to respond to each others’ statements without teacher intervention – great deal of planning needed.
