What is needed in a conclusion? How do you write a good conclusion?

What is a conclusion? A conclusion is not you simply summing up your points from the essay! A conclusion is instead is a place where you get to have your final say on the issues in your essay, the importance of your ideas and show the reader the value of your completely developed argument. In your conclusion you should be clearly answering the question and explaining, with conviction, why your argument is the strongest. A conclusion is not a place for you to bring in a new idea that you haven't already mentioned in the main part of your essay!

Is this a good conclusion? Which of the following was the more important reason why the Civil Rights movement made progress in the 1960s?   *The policies and activities of Martin Luther King Jnr. *The policies and activities of the Black Power movement   Explain your answer with reference to both bullet points. (12 marks) In conclusion, the policies and activities of Martin Luther King was a more important reason than those of the Black Power Movement for why the Civil Rights Movement made progress in the 1960’s because his actions led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Is this a good conclusion?

Praise: It answers the question (makes a judgement) Provides evidence to support Improvements: 1)It does not acknowledge the progress made by the Black Power movement (i.e. it is unbalanced) 2)It does not explain with any conviction why MLK’s achievements were more important (i.e. its not persuading the reader why its argument is strong)

PIN feedback – Task 1 (making the conclusion balanced) KEY TIPS Start your conclusion with the counter argument… In conclusion, …. was important in the… because it led to… Then explain how / why your argument is stronger However, this is not as important as… because this led to… In conclusion, the policies and activities of the Black Power movement were important for why the the Civil Rights Movement made progress in the 1960’s because leaders such as Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael helped to make an impact on African American culture and society by bringing to the medias attention the depravity of Afro-Americans through events such as the race riots in the Watts district. However, this was not as important as the policies and activities of Martin Luther King because his actions led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
