Do Now Pick up the new calendar and put it in your notes section behind all the notes in your note section We will finish watching the youtube video from yesterday and then we need to rock and roll!

Day 1: Simplifying Radicals Unit 5: Radicals Day 1: Simplifying Radicals

What do exponents mean?? 62 = Radical are the inverse operation of exponents

Notation Radical sign Index Radicand

How to simply Radicals Prime Factorize the radicand Circle sets of # in the index Cross and Toss them in front of the radical Simplify the leftovers

Let’s Simplify the following: Prime Factorize the radicand

Use Prime Factorization! 48 24 2 2 12 6 2 2 3

Now, circle pairs of factors that are the same. Why pairs?! Because the index is two for square roots! For each pair, Cross and Toss out one of those factors and place it in front of the radical

Let’s try another one with variables!!

What happens here?!?

Try this one!!

However, the index isn’t always 2! How many sets do we circle in this case!?!

Let’s try another, don’t forget to look at the index!

How about this one?!
