American Nuclear Society Isotopes and Radiation Division (IRD) Agenda Item #4.b American Nuclear Society Isotopes and Radiation Division (IRD) Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors Lei R. Cao, Chair New Orleans, LA June 15, 2016

IRD Mission IRD is devoted to applying nuclear science and engineering technologies involving the production of isotopes, nuclear methods of analysis, and the measurement of radionuclides with assorted equipment in scientific research, development, industrial processes, and nonproliferation and security. Division Technical Committees include 11 sub-committee such as Industrial Measurements and Applications, Nuclear and Atomic Analysis, Radiation Effects, Transuranics, Safeguards, and Research Reactors, etc.

Executive Committee (3-yr term) IRD Governance Officers: Chair: Lei R. Cao Vice-Chair: Hyoung K. Lee Secretary: Kimberly A. Burns Treasurer: Robert Gregory Downing Board Liaison: Dorothy R. Davidson Executive Committee (3-yr term) James M. Bowen Sam Glover Lin-Wen Hu Stephen P. LaMont Xin Liu Jung Rim Michael D. Heibel Donna J. O’Kelly Kenan Ünlü L. Eric Smith Igor Jovanovic Steven R. Biegalski, Ex Officio Hans D. Gougar, Ex Officio

Division/TG Contributions to ANS Revised the following PS: No. 28 “Food Irradiation” No. 30 “U.S. Isotope Supply” No. 73 “Societal Benefits of Radiation” Updated the ANS Personal Radiation Dose Chart Active participation in NPC, Standards Committees, Scholarships, Topic meetings

Participation with Other Professional Societies National Organization of Test, Research, and Training Reactors (TRTR) - represents nearly 50 research reactors IRD traditionally sponsors or co-sponsors one session at each national meeting devoted to research reactors Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) – co-sponsor for IRD Class I Safeguards Topical. INMM promotes best approaches and procedures for implementing all aspects of nuclear materials management CEA, French, co-sponsoring “Advancements in Nuclear Instrumentation Measurement Methods and their Applications” 2013, 2015 World council on isotopes (WCI), co-sponsoring “8th Internatinal Conference on Isotopes”, 2014

IRD Summary Areas of Success Multiple Technical Sessions at Every National Mtg. See Prior VG on Conferences/Topicals/Awards Successful MARC & Predecessors for >40 years Successful 8th International Conference on Isotopes and Expo Growth of students and constant membership within IRD Focus for Future Action MARC/ICI/See Prior VG on Conferences/Topicals/Awards Complete update to Bylaws & Rules Status (update to standard Div. B&R guidelines), Any requests/info for the BOD/officers Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy Division should focus on policy, not radiation measurement technologies. Better synergetic in co-sponsoring conferences/meetings
