Welcome to Open House for 2017-2018 Mrs. Nieto 3rd Grade hurricanes

Mrs. Nieto’s Background Graduated with a Master’s in Elementary Education with ESOL endorsement in 2003. Taught all grades from PreK to 6th Grade at an inner city school that went from a D to an A and a private Episcopal school in Coral Gables that sent graduates to high schools tracked to Ivy League colleges. 2 boys attending Franklin in 5th and 6th Grade. Married to my teenage love.

English and Language Arts (ELA) FSA: Statewide Test Students will be required to write short answers and cite their text evidence. Third grade is the first year for possible retention Combination of FSA test scores and classroom grades.

English and Language Arts (ELA) In Class: Novel Studies Spelling Quiz with dictation sentence Vocab+Grammar Quiz correlating with weekly story or skills (test 2 weeks of vocab) Cold Read tests given when standard has been taught completely to show mastery *Cold Reads will be difficult at first as students adjust. 3rd grade is rigorous from the start to ensure our students master their standards.* Reading journals and workbook pages will be sent home for studying purposes.

FSA alternative test Portfolio Testing – happens over a period of months. The rigor does not change, only the time frame given. Last year the S.A.T. was also given as an alternative to be promoted. Students will test on computers for math and on paper for reading. Scores- Target is a level 3 or above. (Highest level is 5). We will provide more information when the state provides it to our schools. Practice reading every night to ensure success.

Accelerated Reader A.R. Grades for AR: STAR test every quarter to determine level (grade level) Students take AR quizzes as they finish books to earn points towards their goal. Grades for AR: Grade for Comprehension and 1 Grade for % of Goal met Will be input for interims reports and updated at end of quarter with a final grade

Mathematics GO Math Florida Standards Workbook pages are sent home for extra review!!! May be taken as classwork assignment but I will tell students beforehand. AT HOME: Multiplication practice (Memorize! Memorize! Memorize!) speed and fluency are important for future years! Division facts Adding and subtracting with regrouping Place value/Rounding Practice word problems with multi-step answers

Science & Social Studies Science Fusion Study guides will be sent home as notes in their journals. STEM lab is now a Special. Practicing Engineering and thinking outside of the box to solve a problem The United States Communities and Neighbors

Classroom Management Positive feedback, respect and encouragement are the foundation of my classroom environment. Class Dojo Receive immediate notifications of when your student earns points or loses points, and what the behavior was.  Messaging section for messaging between parents and myself where clarification of behavior will be provided if needed. Message blasts for reminders on all important information Incentives are free time and treats.

Volunteers and Chaperones There will not be many in-classroom opportunities for volunteering. I will send emails asking for copies or at-home projects. Copies will be for my class or sometimes for the third grade team At-home projects are mostly preparing centers/materials that we will use in class (printing, laminating, and cutting) Third Grade Events: Emails will be sent out with requests for on-campus volunteering should they arise. Field trip chaperone requests will be put into a bag and I will choose randomly from the bag in front of the students so that it is completely random. This is to be as fair as possible! Once you have been chosen as a chaperone, unfortunately you will not be chosen for another field trip to give other families an opportunity!
