Introduction to Taping & Wrapping

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Think of a time when you had or saw someone who had a body part taped or an elastic wrap applied prior to participation in an athletic event. Why did the person get taped/wrapped? What was the injury that required taping or wrapping? What was the procedure designed to accomplish? Did the procedure help the athlete participate?

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Taping and wrapping for athletic participation is designed to support and protect the participant’s previous injury and/or to prevent injury. Before you properly apply tape or a wrap you must first become familiar with the supplies used in taping and wrapping.

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Today you will have the opportunity to see and touch several taping and wrapping supplies. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE ANY SAMPLES. Some supplies may be chemically toxic and may cause you or someone else harm if sample are mishandled or mistreated. Please be careful!

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Objectives Students will be able to: Define terminology Identify supplies and equipment Elastic Wrap Skin Lube Elastikon Sher-Light Bandage Scissors Pre-Wrap Heel & Lace Pads Tape Cutters Lightplast Tape Adherent Athletic Tape

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Elastic Wrap Stretchy woven cloth Used on injured joints or muscles Provides compression, support & somewhat limits undesired ROM

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Elastic Wrap Comes in a variety of lengths & widths Widths 2” / 3” / 4” / 6” Lengths Single (5 yds) Double (10 yds)

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Athletic Tape Adhesive backed cloth tape Applied to prevent, support or stabilize injuries Prevents or restrict undesired ROM Applied to secure a pad or brace

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Athletic Tape Comes in a variety of widths ½” 1” 1.5” 2”

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Bandage Scissors & Tape Cutters Special scissors or tape cutters with a blunt end used to cut tape & bandages without cutting or injuring the athlete’s skin

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Sher-Light, Lightplast, Conform A stretchable elastic light weight tape that can be torn by hand Most often used to hold bandages in place or secure protective padding Comes in 2” & 3” widths

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Elastikon A stretchable elastic heavy duty tape that cannot be torn by hand and must be cut with bandage scissors Most often used to limit ROM or assist & support injured muscles & tendons Comes in 2” & 3” widths

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Heel & Lace Pads Pre cut, thin foam pads applied to heel & lace areas when taping an ankle Usually coated with skin lube to reduce friction & blisters & reduce tape cuts

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Pre-Wrap Non-adhesive porous foam under wrap Applied prior to the application of tape Protect skin from tape irritation

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Skin Lube A petroleum based product similar to thick Vaseline Applied to heel & lace pads or skin to reduce friction & blisters

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping Adherent Base A sticky adhesive spray or liquid Applied to skin prior to the application of pre-wrap, athletic tape or bandage Keeps tape or bandage in place (anti-slip) Offers some skin protection

Introduction to Taping & Wrapping What is it? What does it do?
