Introduction Although eLearning Courses share similarities, not only their scope of potential users is different. Also techniques vary according to the envisaged outcome. A more technical minded client will not hesitate to engage on solving a mathematical equation, a project manager will likely prefer to learn about soft-skills like change management, how to set priorities amongst targets or monitoring & evaluation. Another issue are the tools put to use. These differ according to the participants and with the subject. A physically very distant group will resort more to asynchronous tools like a forum or pinboards, others might strengthen the team spirit by preferring group exercises or WebQuests. 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

The course: Public Relations and Statistics Building Bridges between Users and Producers This online course has seven modules, separated into learning material for both the users and the producers. The course provides an understanding of facts and figures behind policies and deals with the communication gaps between data users and producers. Participation: 476.00 € 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics The seven Modules Module 1: Relevance of Public Relations for statistics is a two way process between data producers and users. Both have to understand the language and to know the priorities of the other. It is therefore essential to involve both groups. For Users Module 2: Basics in Statistics • Lesson 1: Basic calculation • Lesson 2: Indices • Lesson 3: Spread indices • Lesson 4: Graphs Module 3: Statistical Literacy • Lesson 1: Data awareness • Lesson 2: Analysis, interpretation and evaluation • Lesson 3: Case studies Module 4: How to become a qualified user For Producers Module 5: Media Training • Lesson 1: Background • Lesson 2: Journalists and Statisticians' challenge • Lesson 3: Principles and media communication tools Module 6: Total Quality Management • Lesson 1: Basics on Total Quality Management and Total Quality in official Statistics • Lesson 2: What quality for a statistical information service? The quality cycle! • Lesson 3: A review on Total Quality in official statistics For Users and Producers Module 7: Basics of PR and Statistics in the field of HIV, MDG, SNA Target group: • Users comprise mainly policy makers, researchers and journalists • Producers come from National Statistical Offices or statistical units in ministries. 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics The Objectives The objectives for the users are to: • Improve their “statistical literacy” • Try to make a statistical information more personal/human • Use various journalistic styles, such as article, interview, portray or even feature to make statistics understandable, to make stories out of figures, i.e. write statistical stories • Use a clear and understandable language The objectives for the statisticians are to: • Improve their “communication literacy” • Understand the needs of the public • Build stories on high-quality data which are suitable to describe the issues they address • Use language, graphs, tables and maps that are easy to understand by laymen and not overloaded • Use a clear and understandable language • Become able to transmit their key message to the public The objective for both users and statisticians: The joint objective is to cooperate in producing a reliable picture of the society, its problems and achievements 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics The Pretests Pretests are used to enquire about the basic knowledge. The results are submitted and feedback is generated to inform user if solution was right or wrong and why it was wrong. 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics Examples Examples are generated to make lessons easier to understand. Some of the examples may be user-generated and illustrate relation between input and output. Like this the example of a graph shows and explains statistical development over time and differences among subgroups. 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics The Glossary The glossary provides additional or background information. Click and look at the glossary opening at the context-sensitive position. 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics Videos and Multimedia Videos and other multimedia information make learning more fun and liven up the sessions. Video tutorial show how to do an more complicated exercise step by step before embarking on your own solution 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics Validation Exercises / Self Assessment Validation Exercises / Self Assessment help the user to validate the learning progress. A set of validation exercises is attached to a module. Exercises are solved by multiple choice or similar. Wrong answers are commented and the user can repeat the validation until all answers are correct. Efforts and activities of online access and validation exercise are recorded and statistics are available for tutor 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics Discussion forum / Chat room / Pinboard The Chat room enables communication among registered users. They can check all incoming messages, filter them and respond to selected messages. The Discussion forum is very similar and it allows additional upload of files of any kind. Menu icons allow filtering and other utilities available. These boards remain visible for all registered users during the whole duration of the course and can be stored and transmitted by course administrators The pin board allows users to drop their subject related messages. Other users can consult them all the time and filter them according to subjects These tools are especially useful for asynchronous training 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

Public Relations and Statistics Participants List / Documents / Links The participants list allows to contact other users directly (via e-mail or other means depending how much the other user revealed in his/her profile). Online users are indicated as well as how long ago a user had logged in. The document list stores related or relevant documents. They might also be store within the modules in a separate bibliography page The Link list stores related or relevant links. The links are usually stored directly in a context-sensitive way in the documents but comprehensive link list might be useful 08/12/2018 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

BL: Improve Disaster Risk Management in India by Using Knowledge-Base and Statistics Additional Tools: Alumni networking Lifelong learning and staying in contact are desired, sustainable effects of Inwent’s training programmes. The Inwent Alumni Portal is a place to find former qualification programme participants, access alumni networks and get information about educational opportunities designed especially for Inwent alumni. Inwent created the Inwent Alumni Portal to facilitate contact and exchange with other alumni, Inwent and its partners. The portal offers all the most important services to Inwent alumni: - an overview of e-learning courses and seminars in all regions - links to alumni organisations and regional, programme or specialised networks for alumni - links to interesting alumni events - Inwent newsletters and magazines for download - links to the most important actors in German development cooperation and detailed reports on alumni projects, alumni portraits, experience reports plus the monthly “Alumni Action” to participate in. The Alumni Portal offers an overview of how and where our alumni can join in and take an active part. We want to be sure our range of services offers users added value, which is why alumni can participate in the continuing development of the portal and take part in the alumni questionnaire. BL: Improve Disaster Risk Management in India by Using Knowledge-Base and Statistics Additional Tools: WebQuests What is a WebQuest? A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. The model was developed by Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University in February, 1995 with early input from SDSU/Pacific Bell Fellow Tom March, the Educational Technology staff at San Diego Unified School District, and waves of participants each summer at the Teach the Teachers Consortium. Since those beginning days, tens of thousands of teachers have embraced WebQuests as a way to make good use of the internet while engaging their students in the kinds of thinking that the 21st century requires.
