OPERANT CONDITIONING LEARNING

How do rewards and punishments guide our behaviour? How can we use reward and punishments to guide the behaviour of others?

DEFINITION OF OPERANT CONDITIONING The process of changing behaviour by following a response with reinforcement. DEFINITION OF OPERANT CONDITIONING

FOUNDER OF OPERANT CONDITIONING The founder of operant conditioning is B.F. Skinner Skinner said most behaviour takes place voluntarily-before being triggered by external events. He believed classical conditioning cannot explain these types of behaviours. His famous experiment involving mice in a cage with a leaver highlighted how rewards reinforce behaviour. FOUNDER OF OPERANT CONDITIONING

4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING REWARDS (REINFORCEMENT) 1. POSITIVE REWARD (REINFORCEMENT) -Giving something in order to encourage a behaviour to continue Positive = giving something Reward = encouraging a behaviour to continue E.g. I will give you a bonus mark if you complete your homework all year. 4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING

4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont… REWARDS (REINFORCEMENT) cont… 2. NEGATIVE REWARD (REINFORCEMENT) -Taking something away in order to encourage a behaviour to continue Negative = Taking something away Reward = encouraging a behaviour to continue E.g. I will take away your chores if you get good grades in school. 4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont…

4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont… PUNISHMENTS 3. POSITIVE PUNISHMENT -Giving something in order to encourage a behaviour to stop Positive = Giving something Punishment = encouraging a behaviour to stop E.g. I will give you a detention if you are late for class. 4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont…

4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont… PUNISHMENTS cont… 4. NEGATIVE PUNISHMENT -Taking something away in order to encourage a behaviour to stop Negative = Taking something away Punishment = encouraging a behaviour to stop E.g. I will take away your cell phone if you continue to break curfew. 4 COMPONENTS OF OPERANT CONDITIONING cont…
