Quick Write Take a few moments and answer the following questions on a sheet of paper: - What does the word Nationalism mean? - Can you think of a time when you felt Nationalism for America? - Can Nationalism be a bad thing? If yes, then how so?

Extreme Nationalism grows through Social Darwinism During the time of 1870 – 1914 extreme Nationalism grows Herbert Spencer took Darwin’s ideas of Natural Selection and applied it to human activities - He believed social progress came from “the survival of the fittest.” - The strong in society advance while the weak decline. This notion became know as Social Darwinism - the radical theory used by Western nations in the late nineteenth century to justify their dominance; it was based on Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, and applied to modern human activities

Social Darwinism Social Darwinism Leads to: - people believing they shouldn’t take care of the less fortunate - the belief nations were also engaged in a struggle for existence, and only the fittest nations would survive Provided justification for racism, oppression, and superiority toward and over other people and nations.

Rise of Anti- Semitism Due to Social Darwinism Anti- Semitism, or discrimination against Jews, grew - 1894 Dreyfus Affair in France - In Russia there were organized massacres, or pogroms, of Jews - led to hundreds of thousands of Jews emigrating to other countries

Zionism Some Jews immigrated to Palestine - It was here that Zionism began to form. Zionism was an international movement originally for the establishment of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine, where ancient Israel was located, and later for the support of modern Israel.

Terms you need to know Racism- a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race Anti- Semitism- discrimination against the Jewish people.
