Unit 2: Inventors and Inventions In this Unit you are going to… Identify inventions and machines Describe how they work

The Telephone In 1875, Alexander Graham Bell built the first telephone that transmitted the human voice electrically.

The Television The system of the electronic television was designed in 1927 by Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a 21-year-old inventor who had lived in a house without electricity until he was 14.

The steam engine Thomas Savery was an English military engineer and inventor. In 1698 he patented the first crude steam engine.

The sewing machine Elias Howe was the inventor of the first American-patented sewing machine in 1845 He was born in Spencer, Massachusetts (U.S.A).

The light bulb Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman. He invented the system of electrical illumination in 1878.

Printing machine The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by Johannes Gutenberg, around 1440. Gutenberg, adapted screw presses and other existing technologies, to create a printing system.

The Airplane Wilbur and Orville Wright were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who created and invented the first successful airplane on December 17th, 1903.

The Penicillin The discovery of penicillin is attributed to the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming in 1928. Penicillin antibiotics were among the first drugs to be effective against many previously serious diseases.
