Titration Calculations

Common Core Connection Objectives: Today I will be able to: Analyze a titration curve to determine the strength on an acid/base Calculate the concentration of an unknown acid or base using titration Informal assessment – monitoring student interactions as they participate in the discussion and complete the calculations Formal assessment – analyzing student responses to the practice problems and the exit ticket Common Core Connection Model with mathematics Reason abstractly and quantitatively Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up Explain: Titration Curve Analysis Elaborate: Titration Curve Calculations Evaluate: Exit Ticket

Warm - Up Take out Titration Curve A and B from yesterday What is meant by using the terminology “strong” acid/base or “weak” acid/base? Are these terms a synonym for concentration? The pH of the equivalence point does not have to equal 7. Explain why it can be slightly acidic or basic.

Objectives Today I will be able to: Analyze a titration curve to determine the strength on an acid/base Calculate the concentration of an unknown acid or base using titration

Homework Finish Titration Calculations

Agenda Warm-Up Titration Curve Analysis Discussion Titration Calculations Exit Ticket

Titration Curve Analysis Discussion Have out your titration curves so we can discuss what is occurring during the titration

Important Things to Remember ENDPOINT = POINT OF NEUTRALIZATION = EQUIVALENCE POINT MOLES OF ACID = MOLES OF BASE

Titration Curve: Strong Acid with Strong Base At the equivalence point in an acid–base titration, the acid and base have been brought together in precise stoichiometric proportions. (Endpoint) Bromphenol blue, bromthymol blue, and phenolphthalein all change color at very nearly 20.0 mL At about what volume would we see a color change if we used methyl violet as the indicator?

Titration Curve: Weak Acid with Strong Base The equivalence-point pH is NOT 7.00 here. Why not?? Bromphenol blue was ok for the strong acid/strong base titration, but it changes color far too early to be useful here.

Titration Curve A What acid-base combination is used during this titration?

Titration Curve B What acid-base combination is used during this titration? Why is the equivalence point higher than 7?

Titration of a Diprotic Acid

Titration of a PolyProtic Acid

Titration Calculations Complete the calculations at your desk. Problems not solved in class will be completed for homework

Exit Ticket Predict the equations for the titration of H2CO3 with NaOH
