THE LYM PHATICS Primary abnormalities of the lymphatic vessels are rare. Disease in the lymph glands that interrupts the flow of lymph is common. Lymphoedema: Lymphoedema is the accumulation of lymph in the interstitial spaces as a consequence of defective lymphatic drainage. The oedema fluid is rich in protein, in contrast to the oedema of heart and kidney failure, which has a low protein content.

Lymphoedema of the right leg.

Genital oedema.

Secondary lymphoedema Secondary lymphoedema. The patient’s right arm lymphoedema was caused by infiltration of the axillary lymph glands by metastases from a carcinoma in the right breast. Some carcinomas of the breast present in this way.
