Unit 2, Lesson 7: Naming Covalent Compounds

Starts with a metal: ionic Starts with a non-metal: covalent

Naming Covalent Compounds Write the name of the first element, with a prefix to indicate the number of atoms. Write the name of the second element, with an “ide” ending, and with a prefix to indicate the number of atoms. EXCEPTION: If there is only one atom of the first element, do not use a prefix for that element. (E.g. CO2 is carbon dioxide.) Use P2S3 as an example as you go through the steps – 5 min

NOTE: If a compound has a chemical formula starting with an “H”, then it’s an acid. Acids are an exception to other naming rules. You will not be required to name acids in Chemistry 11, but you should be able to recognize them.
