Starter An animal has a diploid chromosome number of 14. Calculate the number of possible genotypes of gametes it produces due to independent segregation.
Presentation transcript:

Variations -Variations are slight differences between each organism of the same kind which makes them somewhat unique -Variations are caused by genetics and/or mutations (ie. LLOYD  FLOYD)

Variations -Environmental factors change over time, and when they do, those changes can affect certain individuals or organisms more than others -Variation within a species gives more chances for that species to adapt to change

Variations -More chances for adaptation increases the probability that at least some of the species will be able to adapt to the new conditions -Thus, some variations are more advantageous than others depending on the conditions

Variations -Genetic diversity helps the survival of a species should the environment change significantly -Sameness can mean vulnerability that could lead to extinction

Variations in Moths Directions: Given the two kinds of moths pictured to the right, when might the brown variation be useful when the white one isn’t? When might the white variation be useful when the brown one isn’t? What do you think might happen to the numbers of their population over time given those different contexts? HINT: Consider things like predators, weather, environment, and so on.
