Learning Outcomes At the end of learning session student must be able to: Describe the morphological characteristic of mycobacterium. Understand the growth requirement for mycobacterium. Describe ecological characteristic of mycobacterium. Explain the staining method used for mycobacterium identification.

Growth requirement

Ecological Characteristic Mycobacteria are widespread organisms, typically living in water (including tap water treated with chlorine) and food sources. Some including the tuberculosis and the leprosy organisms, appear to be obligate parasites and are not found as free-living members of the genus. *leprosy: a chronic communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and characterized by the production of granulomatous lesion of skin, mucous membrane and PNS.

Staining Characteristic Mycobacteria are classical acid-fast organisms.

Diagnosis .

Pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common presentation of the disease may arise at any site. Some examples and specimens to be collected are shown here.
