Chapter 1 : Chemistry an Introduction

Chemistry is the science that deals with the materials of the universe & their changes Know this definition!

The Scientific Method Solving problems using a scientific approach Logical / analytical thinking used everyday Several key steps Recognize a problem & state clearly (Observe) Propose a poss. soln to prob (hypothesis) Perform an experiment ID variables Control variable – remains constant throughout Independent variable – you do the changing (x-axis on graphs) Dependent variable – response you measure (y-axis on graphs)

Create a model (theory) that attempts to explain why nature behaves in a particular way (can be changed over time) Develop a law to summarize an observed behavior/phenomenon Learning Chemistry Must learn vocabulary Be willing to think Trust yourself to figure things out Develop your problem solving skills Study on a regular basis
