Meet your FABULOUS teachers! Mrs. Cochran Mrs. Stinson 3 years experience Married with one precious pup! We love sports, hanging out with friends and family, and loving on our pup, Cash! I love Diet Dr. Pepper and Cheez Its! (Hint: the way to either of our hearts is snacks) 16 years experience Married with 4 children between us! We love Alabama Football, traveling, and spending time with friends and family! I love Diet Dr. Pepper and peanut butter M&M’s!

Arrival Procedures Students may be dropped off in the morning any time between 7:15-7:55 a.m. Enter the carpool line from Jay street or McQueen Smith Road. (Do NOT drop students in the front of the school. You would have to walk them in if you come to the front of the school.) If your child arrives at school before 7:45 am they are to enter the building, they are to purchase snack***, then go to the purple hall and be seated there with a supervising teacher on duty. They are not to go to their classroom before 7:45 am. If your child arrives between 7:45-8:00 they purchase snack if needed then go straight to the classroom. If your child arrives after 7:55am, they are considered tardy and you must bring them in to the office to sign in. (I know this in an inconvenience, but it is to discourage tardiness which interrupts valuable instruction time.) Transportation department is in the lunchroom from 9:00-1:00 today to answer all questions. Please find out which load your child will ride.

Dismissal and Check-Out Procedures Afternoon car riders will exit the doors by the gym. (Care tags are coming soon!) All walkers will be dismissed at 3:00 pm from the front doors of the purple hall. Bus riders will leave according to first or second load and will exit the front doors. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not park in the front loop of the school at ANY time. This lane is for emergency vehicles and school buses only!!! You could be blocking important emergency vehicles from reaching a child or teacher. I can’t stress how important this is. PLEASE pass this on to your friends and anyone who may be checking out your child. Please limit check-outs to necessary appointments that could not be scheduled outside school hours or illness. The Fifth Grade is departmentalized, which means your child has two blocks of instruction a day; A “Language Arts” block and a “Math, Science, and Social Studies” block. We use every minute and are teaching/working until the end of each block.

Money Procedures Please send any money for lunch, INOW, field trips, etc. in separate checks. Each check is sent to different accounts. When you send in a check please include the following information on the check: Write your child’s first and last name in the “for” section of the check. Also list what the check is for. Please also include your child’s homeroom teacher’s name. Ex. Susie Joe lunch Culpepper, or Johnny Bell field trip Culpepper The “Snack Shack” does not accept checks nor do the students have accounts in there. Please send snack money on a daily basis. Please see the handbook or website for a list of snacks available and also lunchroom procedures and items for purchase. Please remember that if you are applying for free/reduced lunch, you must send a lunch from home until the application is processed. All checks are made payable to Daniel Pratt Elementary School or DPES (for short)

Discipline Plan Please refer to the copy provided of the discipline plan for our classrooms. School wide plan to be implemented soon. Stay tuned…… It will include a demerit system to which 3 demerits will require Administrative disciplinary action . (This will begin after Labor Day) Access student handbook on our website. Hard copy will be distributed at the Principal’s meeting on August 21st at 6:00pm

Language Arts http://www.alabamagrit.org/resources Spelling Reading Students will participate in a variety of activities in Reading. We will work on their development of vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency by working in the reading textbook, workbook, novels, trade books, read-aloud, literature circles. Students will receive classwork grades for Work Station folders. All classwork is to remain in the Work Station folder in our classroom. Major tests will be given on skills and vocabulary. Unit overview sheet should remain in the child’s folder. Students will have a weekly Reading Homework packet that will be due on Friday. Reading/Grammar/Spelling/Writing Major Grades 50% Minor Grades 50% http://www.alabamagrit.org/resources

Science and Social Studies We will be covering U.S History this year from the beginning to 1877. There will be States and Capitals tests given every 3 weeks on specific sections of the U.S. The dates for these tests will be posted on my website along with a song to help them learn and drive you crazy.  We are very excited about changes that have been made in our science curriculum! We will be exploring phyisical, life, Earth, and space science with new textbooks, and engaging STEM activities. We will also be going to Starbase this year so look for more information coming about that. *****A separate parent info meeting will be held with your child’s math teacher.

Other tidbits……. Lockers : Party Info: Lunchroom: will be sold the first week of school. We could use some volunteers that first week to spend time with the students from 7:45-7:55 to help them learn to open them! Your child will need to open their locker 3 consecutive times independently before we will allow them to put their belongings inside. Party Info: As a gift to our students, we generally provide the Holiday specific snack for our students and the activities for that day. The only true “party” we will have will be our Christmas Breakfast, but we promise to make the other holidays special and fun! Reminders will be sent through Remind 101 and you can volunteer to contribute items as needed. Lunchroom: If you choose to eat lunch with your child, you must sit at one of the designated tables with your child only. Please do not photograph any other students while in our building.

REMIND 101 Subscribe for free! We will send periodic texts with important reminders! (No one else sees your number. You can also message us through this system as well.) Mrs. Stinson Mrs. Cochran
