2004 College Goal Sunday/ Cash for College Workshop Follow Up Phone Contact April, 2004

Questions … What happens after students leave workshops? Do students follow through to file by March 2nd deadline? Does a reminder call help?

What we did… Supt of Public Instruction recorded outbound/auto dial message, Spanish version also recorded Script asked if students completed FAFSA and GPA Verification. If not, gave reminder and told them where to go for help. Auto dial calls resulted in large “initial refusals”, likely because it did not ask for the student directly Switched to using “live callers”

What we did… Before March 2nd After March 2nd deadline Called first group of students Attended workshops 1/7 – 2/7. After March 2nd deadline Called 2nd group of students Attended workshops 2/8-3/1 Re-contacted part of Group 1 students

Overall Call Results (2851 contacts) Results of actual contacts, includes complete contact and refusals, “no answers” not included 308 Did NOT Submit Forms by March 2nd 373 Undecided/ Refused to Answer 2170 Submitted Forms By March 2nd * 900 calls not included

Group 1 Response w/ Reminder Call 2.5% Other 6.9% Refusals 1st CALL 22.9% No 67.6% Yes 41.3% No 48.0% Yes 2nd CALL 514 MORE students met March 2nd deadline 10.7% Refusals

Results… With the assistance received at Cash for College workshops, three-quarters of students contacted met Cal Grant deadline. 514 more students submitted forms between first call and March 2nd deadline. It is likely reminder call helped students meet deadline. March 2nd deadline is motivator Second group of students did not receive reminder call.

For the Future… This year was a first step Next year continue using “live callers” Expand “reminder” and “follow up” effort to student households
