Kingdom Protista!
Kingdom Protista Contains the MOST diverse organisms of all the kingdoms! ALL are eukaryotes Animal-like protists: Protozoa Plant-like protists: Algae Fungus-like protists
Protozoans: Animal-like Protists Unicellular heterotrophs that move in a variety of ways 4 groups: Amoebas Flagellates Ciliates Sporozoans
Protozans: Amoebas Form pseudopods to move and feed Ex: amoeba
Protozoans: Cilliates Move by beating cilia that cover the cell Ex: parimecium
Protozoans: Flagellates Move by whipping flagella from side to side Ex: giardia
Protozoans: Sporozoans Parasites Produce spores to reproduce Ex: plasmodium—causes malaria malaria life cycle
Algae: Plant-Like Protists Photosynthetic autotrophs may be uni- or multicellular Produce half of the world’s oxygen! 2 main groups: unicellular and multicellular
Algae: Plant-Like Protists UNICELLULAR (algae) Euglenoids Flagella Diatoms Made of shells composed silica Dinoflagellates Cell spins b/c of two flagella MULTICELLULAR (seaweed) Green Alage Most diverse Red Algae Deep water Brown Algae air bladders help float—kelp
Algae: Plant-Like Protists euglena green algae diatoms red algae dinoflagelates brown algae
Fungus-Like Protists Absorb organic materials and nutrients Resemble some types of fungi
Protists and Disease Giardiasis: causes severe diarrhea and intestinal cramps that can last for 2-6 weeks Amebic Dysentery: causes pain, bloody diarrhea, and fever. Can be fatal if moves into brain Toxoplasmosis: a small number of people develop flulike symptoms, dangerous to developing fetuses Trichomoniasis: STD, women experience discolored discharge, genital itching, and urge to urinate. Cryptosporidiosis: severe cramps and diarrhea that may last up to 2 weeks Chagas Disease: spread by kissing bugs, and can cause several heart related issues Malaria: spread by mosquitoes, causes liver damage and destroys red blood cells causing fever & Anemia. Can lead to death if left untreated.
