Stress-Induced Changes to the Triple-Point Phase Boundary of the Niobium-Deuterium System Andrew Craft, Chemistry Department, University of Hartford Metal-hydrogen (deuterium) systems such as Nb-D are of great interest as materials for the safe storage of hydrogen as a fuel. Most metal-hydrogen (M-H) systems exhibit multiple phases – each of which has a unique solubility of hydrogen. A full understanding of the phase equilibria in M-H systems is crucial to their use as hydrogen storage media. Differential scanning calorimetry has been used to characterize changes to the triple-point phase boundary in the niobium-deuterium system caused by mechanical stress. The triple-point boundary separates several phases in the Nb-D system. Our results show that the temperature and compositional characteristics of the triple-point boundary are affected by mechanical stress.
