Cell and Cell Theory Unit 7: Lesson 1

What is a cell? ALL living things are made of cells smallest unit that can perform the basic activities of life

Organisms individual forms of life that use energy to carry out activities To be classified as living, something must: be organized grow and develop respond to its environment be able to reproduce All organisms need energy, materials, and living space

Unicellular organisms made of a single cell usually too small to see

Multicellular made up of many cells examples: polar bears, frogs, and water lilies their bodies are more complex than unicellular organisms they have many cells that work together cells carry out basic activities of life and have different functions Frog: moves with its arms and legs Water lily: roots hold its soil---take energy from the sun

The microscope led to the discovery of cells most cells are microscopic they are too small to see without a microscope a microscope makes things appear bigger

The Discovery... Robert Hooke: used a microscope to observe tree bark and gave the cell its name Anton Van Leeuwenhoek: One of the first people to use a microscope to see living cells

(Polar Bears are multicellular organisms) The Cell Theory Every living thing is made up of one or more cells. (Polar Bears are multicellular organisms) 2. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. (Bears have fat cells. Fact cells give the bear energy. They also help protect the bear from the cold) 3. Cells come only from other living things. ( Each bear began as a single cell)

Who is Louis Pasteur? french scientist his work showed that microscopic organisms had something to do with sickness and the spoiling of food came up with process known as pasteurization, heat used to kill bacteria in milk Confirmed the cell theory by proving that the theory of spontaneous generation was wrong

Bacteria: large group of one celled organisms; may cause disease (Bacteria is plural. Bacterium is singular Microscope: instrument that uses glass lenses to magnify an object Multicellular: made up of multiple cells Unicellular: Made up of a single cell

Writing Prompt Why is the microscope important for studying cells? Why is the tool important for studying whole organisms? Think about the way a biologist uses a microscope. Think about the way a doctor uses a microscope. How might these uses be different? Why? ***Turn this in on a separate sheet of paper***

3-2-1 Activity on Antony van Leeuwenhoek http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/leeuwenhoek.html 3 things you learned 2 interesting facts 1 Write one question that you would ask him ***Complete this in on the backside of the writing prompt***
