Placental pathology in egg donor pregnancies Fusun Gundogan, M.D., Diana W. Bianchi, M.D., Sicco A. Scherjon, M.D., Ph.D., Drucilla J. Roberts, M.D.  Fertility and Sterility  Volume 93, Issue 2, Pages 397-404 (January 2010) DOI: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2008.12.144 Copyright © 2010 American Society for Reproductive Medicine Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Basal plate images from egg donor and nondonor placentas (H&E stained sections, original magnification ×100 [A, C] and ×400 [B, D]). Severe diffuse CD with dense fibrinoid deposition was identified in the basal plates of egg donor placentas (C, D). Nondonor IVF (A, B) placentas did not reveal CD in majority of the cases (92%), and the fibrinoid deposition was not increased. Figure 2 Immunohistochemical staining with antibodies for CD4 (A, C) and CD56 (B, D) in CD cases from nondonor (upper panel) and egg donor (lower panel) IVF placentas (original magnification ×400). Inflammatory cell infiltration was highlighted with immunohistochemistry, which was severe and diffuse in the basal plates of egg donor placentas (C, D), compared with the mild and focal distribution in nondonor IVF placentas (A, B). CD in egg donor IVF cases was mainly composed of CD4+ T cells and CD56+ NK cells. Fertility and Sterility 2010 93, 397-404DOI: (10.1016/j.fertnstert.2008.12.144) Copyright © 2010 American Society for Reproductive Medicine Terms and Conditions

Figure 3 Morphometric analysis was used to quantify the immunoreactivity for each inflammatory cell type (CD45, leukocyte; CD3, T cell; CD4, T helper cells; CD8, T cell; CD56, NK cell). Immunoreactive cells were counted and normalized to total cell count in the same focus, and the percent of positive immunoreactivity was calculated for each antibody. Data are depicted as means ± SEM in the graph (∗P<.05). Leukocytic (CD45+) cell infiltration was significantly increased in the basal plates from egg donor pregnancies (P=.03). These cells were mostly CD3+ T cells in both groups. In contrast to nondonor IVF placentas, the number of CD4+ (P=.02) and CD56+ (P=0.03) cells was significantly increased in the basal plates of egg donor placentas. CD8+ cell counts were comparable in both groups.
