Favorite Book Character Day is October 27th Mrs. Fesperman’s Classroom Newsletter October 9, 2017 Field Trip As we have mentioned earlier, First Graders will be going on a field trip, the 24th of October to Discovery Place in Huntersville. We will explore the museum but also attend a class about Earth’s Materials. Chaperones are welcome but you must have a Volunteer Form approved if you plan to go and help out. Please look in your child’s folder Monday for the permission slip and more information. Favorite Book Character Day is October 27th Our Spirit Day on 10/27 is Favorite Book Character. Your child is welcome to dress up as their Favorite Book Character on that day. In the past, First Graders had to do a detailed Book Report on their character. This year we will be modifying the report (one page) to have students write about and present in class about their character. We will send a page home this week so you can plan ahead. Spanish Phrase Our Spanish phrase of the week is: !Hasta Luego! Which means- See you later! What Are We Learning? This week we will be learning through our themes of Christopher Columbus and Fire Safety. Math – (1.NBT.3b) I can use the greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols to compare two numbers. ELA – (1.RI.1a) I can answer questions about details in a text. (1.RI.2b) I can identify main topic of a text. (1.W.5a) I can write on a topic. (1.RF. 2c) I can say each sound in a word. Science – (1.E.2.1) Rocks, I can explain how rock and water support plant and animal life. I can describe how some Earth materials solve human problems. (Ex. Hydration, helps things grow, keeps the body clean, shelter, roads, etc. ) Social Studies – (1.C.1.2) I can read about different cultures through various genres. I can learn about diverse cultures through art and music. PYP/IB Connection We are starting a new theme this month. It is Who We Are. We will learn more about how we are similar and different to others, connect to help us understand others and our feelings. The character trait we are learning about is Principled. Reading Homework We hope the reading homework is going well. This is a new process for first grade this year. The goal is to have your child get comfortable with the books that are similar to the reading assessments, answer questions with accuracy, think about what they are reading, read with fluency and be able to use what they read to write out answers to questions we give them in class about the story. Some of the reading books may be too easy and others may be a challenge, but overall they are all appropriate to what we are doing in first grade. Thank you for helping your child build these skills.
