Essential Question: What’s the connection between the individual’s struggle to be a part of a society and a nation’s struggle to unite for a common cause? (Why can’t we all just get along?)

Enforce-to compel observance of or obedience to Entity-a thing that exists as a unit Internal-located within something or someone Presume-to assume something is true Resolve-to decide or become determined

Distend-to bulge or expand Intentions-a purpose or plan Audaciously-boldly or rebelliously Intrusion-an act of trespass or invasion Serrated-jagged/saw toothed edged

1. Why does Gordimer mention her house’s location above a mine. 2 1. Why does Gordimer mention her house’s location above a mine? 2. How does her house represent the internal discord in South Africa? 3. How is Gordimer’s inclusion of the description of the miners also an explanation of why people are afraid in South African society?

Read lines 152-165. What do the changes in the neighborhood, including Gordimer’s description of the “prison architecture,” suggest about residents’ feelings? Support your inferences with specific details/quotes from the text.

4. Evaluate: In lines 58, 136, and 194, the phrase, “wise old witch” is used to describe the husband’s mother. Explain how the wise old witch can be interpreted to symbolize the government of South Africa.
