STEPS Given the four options 1 a + b 2 -a + (-b) 3 -a + b 4 a + (-b) If you have option 1 or 2 , drop the signs, add the numbers together, then add a sign back. If you have option 3 or 4, drop the sign, subtract (larger - smaller), add the sign from the larger number.
