French in St Cadoc's

Why do we teach two languages in primary school? All children in Scotland should now be taking part in 1 + 2 language learning 'Learning another language has positive educational benefits which contribute to the overall cognitive and linguistic development of children and young people.‘ ' Learning another language can foster a deeper understanding of one's own language and can assist young people's cognitive development in a variety of ways. These include enhanced mental flexibility, improved problem solving, greater learning capacity, an increase in interpersonal skills and improved academic achievement and attainment across a range of subjects. ‘ Both quotes are from the Scottish Government

French in St Cadoc's Active - games, videos, rhymes, songs, conversations, ball games Engaging - colourful flipcharts/ppt Linguascope - fun in school and at home

Resources New resources - playground signs - games - Linguascope - talking dice - question cube

What do the children learn in primary school? Early Level greetings, numbers, colours, body parts and much more... First Level greetings, numbers to 40, likes and dislikes, animals and preferences and much more... Second Level children are beginning to collate all of their learning so far to create drama scenes in their topics e.g. 'le cafe', weather reports and are able to write short passages about themselves and others In Primary 7, children take part in a topic called 'Visitez Paris' which encompasses all primary school learning.

A Typical French Lesson We begin with a French song We then use the question dice to ask and respond to questions in French We will then either learn something new or revise and improve on previous learning All of the topics we learn throughout primary have songs that link to the vocabulary making learning fun and active

St Cadoc's Language Learning Platform All children in Scotland should now be taking part in 1 + 2 language learning We want to make this learning fun and engaging for all pupils Linguascope is an excellent tool for children with EAL Linguascope.com
