Facebook 9/6/16

Agenda Assessing blog posts Facebook discussion Homework: Edit blogs – make sure that they match our discussion of what made effective posts All edits due at start of class on Thurs. Read Facebook articles for Thursday

Assessing Blog posts In groups, decide which of the blog posts you find to be the strongest, and explain why. Post this on our site with the tag “assessing blog posts” To make this assessment, closely read the assignment and consider the genre of blogs Remember the goal of this assignment was to convince UNC students that we should study Facebook and analyze it with rhetorical tools A strong blog should: Make a clear and convincing argument Use evidence to support the argument This evidence should center 3 articles from our class readings, including one scholarly article Integrating evidence means more than inserting long block quotes or referencing simple data without connecting it to the author’s argument in the source, for example, giving the data of how many people use FB without connecting it to the author’s point about that number indicating that it has a big effect on body image The blog should include citational information/hyperlink Connect each point with clear transitions Use language and other rhetorical conventions common to the blog genre Be understandable to someone not in this class

Body image Cohen and Blaszynski Higher FB use, higher risk for BID No notable difference btw FB and other media exposure in terms of how it affecting AC and BID

How do ideas of body image get created on FB?

Facebook Self Gil-Or, et. al. FB interactions can improve self-esteem of people with low self-esteem, but can lead to excessive use and addiction FB self = more socially acceptable Presenting false self on FB = easier and less risky Vulnerable users may create FB self that is more rewarding and appealing than true identity, this can lead to addiction

How does one create a “Facebook-self’?

What can you learn about people from Facebook?
