Romeo and Juliet reading 1 Date: Objectives Convey reading plan and start reading Act One. Answer questions for the purpose of a closer reading for the Junior Cert. Warm –up – A4 pad (to be put into folder) “A pair of star-crossed lovers”, “death-marked love”, “naught could remove”. Write down the above quotes and answer this question. Does knowing the end of a story before you read it effect how you feel about the story? Why?

Reading Plan 5 Acts – average 5 scenes – average 5 pages a scene. Aim to read 7-8 pages a day – complete 7-8 weeks. Warm-up – Notes -Read 7-8 pages - notes– questions. Important note: Oral exam includes reading aloud – practise that during these readings.

Notes – write this down Prologue: short speech to introduce play. Suggests what happens to Romeo and Juliet is inevitable – key theme ‘fate’. Unhappy ending makes this a ‘tragedy’. (Interesting fact: A chorus is a single actor) Take this note time to get volunteers for readings.

Roles: Scene set on the streets of Verona Roles: Scene set on the streets of Verona. A fight breaks out Aim to read up to Romeo’s introduction (line 150) Chorus Sampson (C) Gregory (C) Abram(M) Tybalt (C) Benvolio (M) Citizens Capulet (C) Lady Capulet (C) Montague (M) Prince Note to self: Read summary aloud before we start Reading aloud tips: Posture for diaphragm, aim your voice, slow pace and relax.

Questions – Point, “reference”, explain. What starts the fight in this scene? (c38) What are Benvolio and Tybalt’s reactions to the fight? (c57-65) What are the Lady’s reactions in contrast to the men? What ends the fight? (interesting note ‘c’ - abbreviation for the Latin ‘circa’ – means approximately. C38 – around line 38)

What do you think the word ‘demonise’ means? Give examples. Cooldown Question People naturally split into groups. They then think their group is great and they ‘demonise’ another group. What do you think the word ‘demonise’ means? Give examples.
