Forum’s Brief Background Founded in 2012 by; Tanganyika Law Society Legal and Human Rights Centre Lawyers Environmental Action Team and National Organisation for Legal Assistance

Forum’s Goal The main goal of the forum is to advocate for reforms in our criminal justice system That is, reform in; Police Force Court Public Prosecution Division Prison Department and Public perception and Understanding

Forum’s Specific Objectives Improved Police and Prison Department accountability Advocate for reduction of arrest and detention Enhance independence of the police and prison services Advocate for increased use of non custodial sentences Advocate for adequate work facilities and environment for police and prisons Advocate for improved basic standards for prisons and detention places

2016 Activities Engage new members to the Forum Conduct two Stakeholders’ workshops Revise the 101 Questions Booklet Publish 3 Discussion Papers on: Police Accountability; How we can improve it Police Independence; Why it is important Security Councils; What are they and how can the public use them Resource mobilisation

Mode of Operation Forum is hosted at TLS Forum has a fulltime coordinator Forum work is undertaken by consensus by all members by commenting on draft papers and positions Forum’s work complements the work of Members Forum to hold frequent meetings
