Semester 1 Creative Car Project

Objective You have been given the opportunity to apply as a car designer for the Lavender Motor Company. Your goal is to design a car that will travel the greatest distance from the bottom of a ramp using only gravity and momentum. ( This is not a speed challenge we are looking for which car will travel the farthest distance not the fastest.)

Objective In order to secure your position with the company, you have been asked to submit: A letter of introduction (Cover Letter) A scale drawing of your car for review. A prototype of your car for review.

Objective Letter of introduction: 1.) Your Letter must be at least ONE PAGE (12 pt font, double spaced, 1 inch margins.) 2.) Your application may be typed or hand written ( neatly, in black or blue ink.) 3.) Must be in complete sentence, five sentences per paragraph. Paragraph one introduce yourself and explain why your car is the best. Paragraph two (describe the physics concepts involved in the project.

Objective Scale drawing and logo of design: 1. scaled drawing with measurements for all sides of the car in METRIC UNITS (mm, cm) May be computer drawn or hand drawn. 2. An arrow indicating where you believe the heaviest part of the car is located. 3. Labeled arrows indicating the forces acting on your car (friction, gravity, etc.) 4. Your car’s logo or symbol must be 7” x 12”cm and in color.

Objective Scale drawing and logo of design:

Objective The Car: Must contain: 1.) must be able to travel at least 1 meter from the bottom of the ramp. 2.) wheels must be made of something other than wheels ( no skateboard wheels or anything that was designed as a wheel) 3.) Must have at least two axels

Objective The Car: Cannot contain: 1.) A mass greater than 1kg (2.2lbs) 2.) Actual wheels taken from ANYTIHNG 3.) Pre-assembled car kits, pinewood derby, or body parts from a car. 4.) The car’s length or width cannot be greater than 50cm 5.) Any additional energy ( battery, motor, etc..)

Project specifics You may work with ONE partner to build a single car together. Your partner may be from another class. (8th grade) Each applicant (partner) must submit an original application cover letter, scale drawing and logo.

How to earn an “A” Must design and build a prototype car that travels the required distance. Must complete the letter of introduction. Must complete a scale drawing and logo design for your car.

IMPORTANT NOTES Tampering with another applicant’s project in any way will result in an “F”. In order to receive full credit, your application must be completed on time ( for racing day).
