Electron configuration Bohrs model Electromagnetic spectrum
Atomic Models Rutherford suggested that electrons revolve around the nucleus in circular or elliptical orbits. Rutherford’s model could not explain why electrons did not crash into the nucleus. Bohr’s model of an atom electrons travel around the nucleus in specific energy levels
Atomic Models Rutherford’s model of an atom Bohr’s model of an atom electrons orbit the nucleus just as planets orbit the sun Bohr’s model of an atom electrons travel around the nucleus in specific energy levels
Bohrs Model electrons can be only certain distances from the nucleus. each distance corresponds to a certain quantity of energy that an electron can have. An electron that is as close to the nucleus as it can be is in its lowest energy level. The farther an electron is from the nucleus, the higher the energy level that the electron occupies. The difference in energy between two energy levels is known as quantum energy.
Electron motion Electrons Act Like Both Particles and Waves The electrons travel only in specific locations around the atom called orbitals Link
Electrons and Light Einstein proposed that light has properties of waves and particles. Waves travel with distinct properties and energy.
Wave Properties Frequency Wavelength Amplitude The frequency is the number of waves that pass a stationary point in one second Wavelength The wavelength is the distance between two consecutive crest or troughs of a wave. Amplitude The height of a wave from top of crest to bottom of trough Video/pic
Electromagnetic Spectrum The electromagnetic spectrum is the total range of electromagnetic radiation from the longest wavelength to the shortest wavelength Visible Light roygbiv Most all light travels at 2.998 x 108 m/s
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light Emission Line-emission spectrum: The wavelength of light emmited when a voltage is applied to a gaseous element The spectrum is due to the release of energy when an electron moves from a higher orbital to a lower orbit
